Football: SDCC Coaches Earn Nominations

To say it was a good year for San Diego area Football coaches is probably an understatement. In the process, teams and head coaches made names for themselves. Players and coaches alike had continued successes while other took steps towards history.

Now that the season is over the banners will be hung, recognition is earned, and awards handed out. Scorebook Live has listed the Top 10 Candidates for Football Coach of the Year 2022-23. The San Diego City Conference has earned 4 of the top 10. Topping the list is Western League, CIFSDS Open Division, CIF Southern Section and CIF 1-AA State Champion head coach David Dunn from Lincoln High School. The Hornets finished with a 13-1 record winning their last 12 games. Joel Allen from Point Loma HS brought his team from a winless league record a couple years ago to a D-III title game finishing the season at 10-3. Paul Lawrence took University City to an 11-3 record winning the City League title and D-III CIFSDS Championship and earning a Southern Section matchup at CIF State. Matt Marquez led his Crawford Colts to an 11-2 season winning the Central League title for the first time in 7 years. Their 11-2 record was the best since 2013. Crawford was the #1 seed in Division 5 reaching the Championship game.
