Madison running back Jaylon Brown called Friday’s Western League 28-14 win over No. 5-ranked Cathedral Catholic a “rollercoaster ride”
“We were on top, then we went flat, then we cranked it up,” said Brown, who scored on runs of 26 and 20 yards as No. 1-ranked Madison improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2011 and is 1-0 in league play.
The game had plays you won’t see in backyard, neighborhood, pickup contests.
In the second quarter, Cathedral’s Will Bond returned a kickoff 51 yards to set the Dons up at midfield. Two plays later, the Dons were chasing Isaac Turner, who returned an interception 79 yards for a score.
Later in the quarter, Madison’s Jake Farnam crashed through and got a hand on a Cathedral (3-5, 0-2) punt. But the ball rolled forward, touched a Madison player and was recovered by Cathedral for what turned out to be an 11-yard gain for the Dons, who converted the muff into a touchdown on a 5-yard run by Bond.
In the third quarter, Madison punter Lawson Minshew got off a boomer, but the officials ruled he had fielded the snap while on a knee, and was down at that point … a 14-yard loss, handing the ball to Cathedral at the Madison 23. Two plays later, Madison’s James Tivao restored order by intercepting a pass.
On Madison’s next series, the Warhawks were involved in one of the strangest plays of the season.
Under heavy pressure, quarterback Reggie Johnson fired a pass that was batted in the air by a Dons lineman. Johnson caught the ball — basically a pass to himself — and rifled a 70-yard scoring pass to Dylan McFeely.
The play, however, didn’t count as Johnson’s heave was the second forward pass of that play.
So instead of a TD, the Warhawks were penalized and forced to punt.
“We had the momentum, then that blocked punt, turnover deal took the air out of us,” said Madison coach Rick Jackson. “Fortunately, we were able to flip the momentum back in our favor.
“It wasn’t the prettiest win, but we’ll take it.”
No. 2 Lincoln 54, St. Augustine 0: Roderick Robinson carried just six times but gained 154 yards and scored three TDs as Lincoln improved to 7-1, 2-0 in the Western League. KJ Chatham completed 7 of 10 passes for 177 yards and two TDs. David Peevy had two sacks, one for a safety, and intercepted a pass. Raylon Logan had four catches for 60 yards and a TD. Saints is 3-5, 1-1.
No. 10 Mira Mesa 48, San Diego 31: Mira Mesa’s Makei Thompson returned a punt 67 yards for a TD, rushed 11 times for 114 yards and two TDs, plus caught six passes for 68 yards and a TD. QB Tyson Line completed 18 of 29 passes for 249 yards with three TDs. He also rushed for 42 yards. Chance Bell caught four passes for 77 yards and a TD as the Marauders improved to 4-2, 1-0 in the Eastern League. For San Diego (3-5, 0-2), Baron Noble returned a kickoff for a TD. Jayden Wade, Curtis Rodgers and Charlie Berkley also scored for the Cavers.
La Jolla 41, Patrick Henry 35: La Jolla QB Jackson Diehl completed 15 of 21 passes for 327 yards and four TDs, plus rushed for 42 yards. Matthew Princen caught five passes for 87 yards and three TDs. Ryan Weinberg returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score, plus had six catches for 100 yards. Justin Scully had eight carries for 83 yards and a TD, plus had 10 tackles for the Vikings (5-3, 2-0). Henry’s Malachi Ghitman passed for 268 yards and a TD and rushed for 119 yards and three scores. Hassan Nourredine caught seven passes for 171 yards, rushed for 20 yards and had a sack. Caprece Pressly had 93 yards on 18 carries and scored a TD for Henry (2-4, 0-1).
Point Loma 42, Morse 12: Point Loma’s Chase Lowary carried 14 times for 116 yards and scored a TD. Aaron Lee caught three passes for 62 yards and two scores. Lee has caught nine passes for 251 yards, six for TDs. QB Maxim Newbegin came off the bench for injured starter Jackson Emerson and completed 4 of 6 passes for 59 yards and two TDs. Emmett Jacobson intercepted his sixth pass of the season, returning it 23 yards for a TD. Point Loma (6-1, 1-0) is off to its best start since 2014. Morse’s Johnny Mosti completed 15 of 25 passes for 206 yards. Omar-Logan Ramirez returned a kickoff 95 yards for a TD for Morse (5-3, 1-1).
University City 71, Canyon Hills 6: Freshman QB Quentyn DeMara passed for two TDs and rushed for a third. LaDainian Lawrence rushed for two scores while Dreyden Gardner caught two TD passes. Cayden Dawson returned a fumble for a score for University City (5-2, 2-0). The 71 points are the second most in school history. Canyon Hills is 1-5, 0-2.
